An online casino is licensed in Great Britain if its exact domain appears on the Gambling Commission's public register against an active remote casino licence. Everything else — the bonus, how long the brand has existed, the badge in the footer — cannot be checked against any source, so it does not work as a test.

The four checks
1. The domain, not the brand. A licence attaches to the domains recorded against it. One licensed company routinely runs a dozen brands, and a site carrying a familiar brand on a different domain is not covered by that entry. Search the exact domain, without the `https://`.
2. The status. Lapsed, surrendered and revoked licences stay visible in the register — that is deliberate, so you can see an operator's history. It also means the status column is the whole test. "Appears in the register" is not the same as "holds a live licence".
3. The activity. A remote betting licence does not cover casino games. The register records them as separate activities, and plenty of operators hold one without the other.
4. The licence holder. The register names the company that answers for the site. If the casino's own website does not say who operates it and the register does, you already know more than the site is telling you.
Three badges that prove nothing
- The "licensed and regulated" footer badge. It is an image. Anyone can copy it. The register is the source; the badge is decoration.
- "Established 2011". A brand can have existed for fifteen years and hold a British licence since last month, or not hold one at all. What the register does give you is the licence start date — and there is a telling cluster on 1 November 2014, when the point-of-consumption regime took effect.
- Affiliate "top 10" rankings. Most are ordered by commercial arrangement and then described as "tested". The register is the one ordering nobody can pay to change.
What the register will not tell you
It will not tell you whether withdrawals are fast, whether the bonus terms are fair, or whether support answers. No public source certifies any of that, so a list scoring those things is publishing an opinion in the costume of a test.
What a licence does give you is somewhere to complain. A licensed operator answers to the Commission for withdrawals, account closures and self-exclusion. An unlicensed one answers to nobody in Britain.
